Krewe History

The story of Tampa Bay's most magical krewe.

How It All Began

Founding

A Krewe Is Born

Tampa Bay, 2020

The Krewe of Unicorns was born in 2020 from a simple but irresistible idea: bring a little more magic, a lot more color, and an open-hearted welcome to the streets of Tampa Bay. A small band of friends who loved a good parade, and believed the world could always use more wonder, came together with capes stitched, glitter at the ready, and a motto that said everything: "All for Magic, Magic for All."

The spark came the winter before, when a handful of friends watched the great krewes roll down Bayshore Boulevard and thought: why not a herd of our own? Something bright, something kind, something that made every child on the curb gasp and point. In 2020, twelve founders unfurled their rainbow flags and joined Tampa Bay's carnival and Gasparilla season, and a city already in love with pageantry welcomed the most dazzling newcomers it had ever seen.

The herd never stopped growing: forty members and a first float within two seasons, well over a hundred believers by 2024, and a waiting list that only gets longer. The purple-and-gold banners flew, the krewe band played, and a brand-new chapter of the city's celebration calendar was written in every color at once.

Identity

Tampa Bay's Most Magical Krewe

Who we are

The Krewe of Unicorns holds a joyful distinction: Tampa Bay's most magical krewe. Where other krewes reach for tradition, we reach for the rainbow, marching in shimmering capes and spiral horns, our whimsical band calling across Bayshore Boulevard, drawing crowds who come for the sparkle and stay for the sheer good fun.

Here, the costume is more than finery; it's a statement of belonging. Whether members grew up believing in magic or simply feel that pull toward something brighter and kinder, the glitter is a common thread. Each carnival season, the herd turns out in force: capes flowing, beads flying, and a burst of color that stops a crowd in its tracks and makes everyone, for a moment, believe.

Community

Growing the Herd in Tampa Bay

A community takes shape

What began as a circle of friends quickly grew into a proper community. Season after season, new faces arrived, drawn by a friend's invitation, a glimpse of a rainbow float, or simply a curiosity about those beaming people in horns and capes. The herd became known not just for its carnival-season sparkle, but for its year-round warmth: socials, fundraisers, and the kind of gatherings where strangers leave as friends.

The secret, members will tell you, is the welcome. "New faces," goes the saying, "are simply friends we haven't met yet." That spirit of generosity, inclusion, and genuine joy has been the herd's greatest treasure, passed hand to hand from the founding members to every newcomer who chases a rainbow through our door.

Tradition

The Parade Tradition

The carnival and Gasparilla parade season is the heartbeat of the herd's calendar. Every year, the Krewe of Unicorns turns out to march through Tampa Bay's streets with capes pressed, beads loaded, and the krewe band tuned, turning an ordinary morning into something people talk about for weeks.

The parade route becomes a ribbon of every color at once. Children dash for beads and rainbow trinkets tossed from the ranks; families stake their curbside spots hours early; and the roar of the crowd as the band strikes up never gets old, no matter how many seasons a member has marched. It is, every time, a little bit magical.

Beyond the main parade, the herd has built a rich calendar of events: the Enchanted Ball, socials, volunteer days, and seasonal gatherings that keep the community alive and thriving through every month of the year.

Service

More Than a Party: A Force for Good

From its earliest days, the Krewe of Unicorns understood that the best parties also do some good. Service and charity became woven into the herd's identity alongside the parades and the music. Over the years, members have donated thousands of dollars and countless volunteer hours to the Tampa Bay community: stocking shelves at local food banks, brightening the days of children in the hospital, mentoring young people, and lending strong hands wherever they are needed.

It's quiet work, mostly. No cameras, no fanfare. Just herd members rolling up their sleeves because it's the right thing to do. That commitment to service is, in many ways, the truest expression of the krewe's magic: generous, community-minded, and never asking for the credit.

Celebration

The Enchanted Ball

An evening of elegance & wonder

If the parade is the herd's heartbeat, the Enchanted Ball is its soul. Each year, members and their guests dress in their finest gowns and capes, tiaras and horns, and gather for an evening of dinner, dancing, and the kind of glittering revelry that feels lifted straight from a fairy tale.

The Ball celebrates everything the herd holds dear: beauty, wonder, fellowship, and the sheer joy of a night among friends. The krewe band plays, toasts are raised, and the dancefloor fills with members who have marched together in parades, volunteered side by side, and now share this finer evening together. It is, by every measure, one of Tampa Bay's most enchanting annual traditions.

Legacy

A Rainbow Just Beginning

The road ahead

Only a handful of seasons after that first parade, the Krewe of Unicorns shows no signs of slowing. New members join every year, bringing fresh energy and enthusiasm to a herd that has never lost its founding spirit. The band still plays, the capes still shimmer, and the motto still rings true: "All for Magic, Magic for All."

The herd's story is, at its heart, a Tampa Bay story: a city that embraces its traditions, celebrates its communities, and always has room for one more face at the table. The Krewe of Unicorns carries that spirit forward, season after season, with rainbow flags flying and the magic flowing freely.

A thousand welcomes. Come chase a rainbow with us.
